| Peterlee's Venetian twin
Full of joy and very proud of ourselves, after our success at Scarborough, Peterlee & District 368 travelled to Italy to celebrate the 25th Charter of the Venice RT 17 and to honour them with a twinning. Two members of our party decided to wait in the hotel bar for the registration to begin, quietly testing some good Italian wine. Ten bottles later and after looking at their watches they began to feel concerned. Nobody had turned up. The registration was not being held in the bar but in another room. In the evening we were transferred to a 17th century maison where the welcoming party took place. Wearing miners' helmets, we kindly returned the 'long lost bell' to the Venice Table. The following day we visited a 16th century villa and got lost in the maze. After lunch we returned to our quarters to prepare for the formal 25th Charter dinner - an excellent affair with good food and wine followed by a disco. One of our party, Paul, did a lot of international work during the disco, chatting up the Austrian Ladies. The Austrian Tablers were not too impressed but still invited us to their half year conference in November. Whilst the rest of us were enjoying a few more drinks, Paul, for the second night running, started to have problems with the Venice walls and needed to be escorted home. The Monday saw us a bit tired at the airport, where Mauro (Venice RT Vice-Chairman) and Stefano (Past Chairman) wished us a safe return flight. The Venice council have written a letter thanking Paul for cleaning up Venice's walls during Saturday and Sunday night but sent an invoice for the cleaning of the streets. Shame on Paul for not finding the time to pop into one of the almost 200 churches in Venice for mass. RDA I.O. Peterlee & District 368 |

MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM or WHAT WERE YOU DOING AT 20.30 THE 15.7.99? What were you doing when the earth formed? When the first animal got out of the ocean? When the monkeys had enough to hang from a tree? When Napoleon lost at Waterloo? When England won the World Cup? When... What were you doing at 20.30 the 15.7.99? Think hard, remember and never forget, you will say to your children one day 'That night I was doing...' It started. The quoits final had a new challenger, the Brancaleone's Army of Peterlee 368 (Keith 'The Crippled', Ray 'Matusalemme', Roberto 'Are they eatable?' and Stew 'I'll Get Lucky Tonight') stand gasping for a drink face to face with the Almighty Lords of The Quoits: Spennymoor 1039, defending the Trophy for the 19th time running. Seven throws later, it was all over. 10-1. No time for thinking, no time for strategy... just no time! The crowd stood still, mute in disbelieve as the Brancaleone's Army was heading for the bar where a long time waiting drinks finally clear away the thirst of the four brave, and victorious, members of Peterlee & District 368. What were you doing at 20.30 the 15.7.99? We were winning the quoits trophy! YiT, K.R.R.S. |
